Poetry Jam - My Turn

I was reading the latest post from Megan over at SortaCrunchy, and she's hosting a little poetry jam in honor of National Poetry Month.

This poem is one that stuck with me while I was making the decision to leave my OB at 34 weeks and choose an all natural birth at the birthing center. It also rang in my head when I chose to cloth diaper and as I continue to choose AP. Anyway, it's one I learned my junior year in English (high school), and I love its rhythm.

It Couldn't Be Done by Edgar Guest

Somebody said it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

Oh! I love this! You know, I don't think I've ever heard this one before. What a great selection. Totally speaks to me today. Thank you!!

I've never heard of this poem either but I love it! Empowering without being overbearing. There was a poem that really spoke to me in high school too - I had it taped up in my closet and I would read it in the mornings before getting ready...I'm off to find it.
